Bright Renewables and Nordsol partner to build the first bio-LNG plant for Vireo in Norway

29 October 2025
Nordsol and Bright Renewables have joined forces to deliver the bio-LNG (liquefied biomethane, or LBG) production plant for Vireo in the Hardanger region of Norway. This collaboration marks the first partnership between the two technology companies, combining their proven expertise in biogas upgrading and biomethane liquefaction.
“By combining Bright’s robust biogas upgrading system with Nordsol’s innovative liquefaction technology, we are creating a compact, efficient and scalable bio-LNG production concept. This partnership brings together two complementary technologies that perfectly fit the needs of onsite bio-LNG production.”
Michiel van Aken, CTO of Nordsol

Integrated solution from biogas to bio-LNG

In this project, Nordsol acts as the main contractor to integrate the full scope from raw biogas to bio-LNG. Bright Renewables provides the technology for biogas upgrading to biomethane, while Nordsol delivers the biomethane liquefaction technology that converts the biomethane into bio-LNG. The two systems are closely integrated to create an energy-efficient and easy-to-operate solution for decentralised bio-LNG production from biogas.

Proven membrane technology for biogas upgrading

The PurePac system from Bright Renewables is based on advanced membrane separation technology, offering continuous operation without regeneration cycles. This results in high energy efficiency, stable biomethane output, and simple system control.

Efficient liquefaction using the reverse Brayton cycle

The biomethane from the PurePac system directly feeds into the Nordsol Core unit, where Flash-2-Sweep™ membranes prepare the gas for liquefaction. Nordsol’s liquefaction technology, based on the reverse Brayton cycle, then cools the biomethane to -156°C, producing high-quality bio-LNG suitable for use in heavy transport and maritime applications.

“This demonstrates the power of combining technologies and expertise. Our biogas upgrader technology guarantees stable, high-purity biomethane essential for efficient bio-LNG production. This integrated approach minimises operational complexity and sets a new standard for decentralised, high-yield bio-LNG solutions. We see this successful collaboration as a blueprint for rapid market expansion across Europe.”
Jafeth Bulsink, Head of Sales at Bright Renewables.

Supporting Norway’s transition to fossil-free transport

The Hardanger bio-LNG plant for Vireo represents an important step toward Norway’s transition to a fossil-free transport sector. The plant will produce renewable, carbon-neutral fuel from locally sourced biogas, demonstrating the potential of circular energy solutions for regional development.
