Bright boosts Germany’s biomethane shift with three new projects

Bright Renewables is set to make substantial strides in Germany with the construction of three new biogas upgrading projects. Two of these biogas upgrading projects feature CO2 liquefaction systems to produce liquid bio-CO2 alongside biomethane production. Together, these projects bolster Germany's transition to more efficient and sustainable technologies to produce renewable gases and liquid CO2 as valuable end-product.

Biomethane and CO2 liquefaction in Germany

Located in Heek, Helmstedt, and Essen, each project feeds the renewable gas, produced from manure digestion, to the gas grid for further distribution. The Heek project is a collaboration with three local farmers. It features a PurePac Grand biogas upgrader of 1400 Nm3/hr with an integrated CO2 liquefier of 1200 kg/hr. The upgrader will be positioned at one farm while pipelines will channel biogas from the other farms into a centralized gas balloon near the upgrader.

Helmstedt and Essen projects are scaled with capacities of a PurePac Medium of 750 Nm3/hr biogas including and a 700 kg/hr CO2 liquefier, and a PurePac Compact of 200 Nm3/hr biogas, respectively. The CO2 liquefaction system uses CO2 as a refrigerant, serving as a cleaner alternative to using Freon or Ammonia.

Sustainable alternative for CHP's 

Germany, home to numerous biogas plants with combined heat and power (CHP) units producing heat and power, is increasingly embracing biogas upgrading to produce high value biomethane. Bright’s biogas upgraders allow for seamless integration into both existing biogas facilities and new plant developments.

Biogas upgrading offers several advantages — the upgraded product has multiple uses: biomethane can be injected into the natural gas grid, it can be converted to bio-CNG, or further processed into bio-LNG, and used as renewable fuel for heavy-duty transport. Additionally, the incorporation of CO2 liquefaction systems captures and liquefies CO2 from the biogas upgrading process for a variety of applications.
