Bright Renewables to Deliver Biogas Upgrading and CO₂ Liquefaction System for Canadian Biofuel Facility

20 May 2026
Bright Renewables, a sustainable energy technology provider, is delivering a biogas upgrading system and CO₂ liquefaction solution for a biofuel facility currently under construction in York Region, Canada.

The project marks Bright Renewables’ first liquid CO₂ (LCO₂) installation in Canada, representing an important milestone in the company’s expansion in North America.

Once operational, the facility will produce approximately 11,023 short tons/yr of liquid bio-CO₂ and 353 million scf/yr of Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) annually.

Advancing Circular Waste-to-Energy Solutions in the York Region

Bright’s Biogas upgrading and CO2 liquefaction technology will deliver environmental and economic benefits across the York region by converting approximately 165,000 tons of organic waste into high-quality RNG annually.

Sourced from the region’s green bin program, this organic waste will be transformed into renewable energy, with the resulting RNG equivalent to the annual energy demand of approximately 5,000 Canadian households.

“We are excited about this collaboration. Canada’s renewable natural gas market represents one of the most compelling opportunities we see globally. It has the feedstocks, the policies, and with our high-tech systems the potential to become a leader in RNG and bio-CO₂ production. Our technology is not just about producing renewable natural gas and bio-CO₂. It is about enabling a practical, scalable answer for Canada’s hard-to-abate sectors.”

Project scope

Bright Renewables will build a large-scale biogas upgrading system with a capacity of 1,553 SCFM of biogas. The technology utilizes membranes with high separation efficiency, as they enable the maximization of renewable natural gas yield.

The project also includes a CO₂ liquefaction system with a capacity of 4,409 lb/hr enabling the recovery of CO₂ from the upgrading process. This CO₂ is converted into liquid bio-CO₂ using carbon dioxide itself as a natural refrigerant—resulting in an energy-efficient and environmentally responsible process.

The overall scope of supply includes biogas treatment, upgrading, RNG compression, heat recovery, CO₂ liquefaction, and CO₂ storage. An integrated control and automation system, combined with advanced gas analysis and monitoring, ensures consistent quality of biogas, RNG, and liquid bio-CO₂.

By maintaining full control of these processes on-site, the facility can operate efficiently while ensuring reliable, high-quality production.
